Checking Your Domestic Fuel Tank

Regularly inspecting your fuel tank is crucial to prevent damage, leaks, or environmental risks. Here's a guide to help you maintain your tank.

What to Check

  • Check for damage: Look for rust, splits or cracks, bulging, gauges that aren't working, subsidence on the base, dead foliage, oil stains, or a strong smell of oil.
  • Check for leaks: Inspect visible pipework, valves, and filters for leaks. Also, check secondary containment (tank bunds) for liquid or rubbish.
  • Check the contents gauge: Ensure the gauge is working properly.
  • Check the vegetation: Trim vegetation that could obscure the tank's condition.
  • Check the drip trays: Ensure drip trays for remote fill pipes are free of oil or water.

How to Check the Oil Level

  1. Take the cap off the top of the tank.
  2. Insert a dipstick (garden cane) down to the bottom of the tank.
  3. Withdraw the stick and observe the oil mark to determine the level.

It's recommended to have an OFTEC-registered engineer inspect your tank and pipework annually as part of your boiler service.
